Light & Shadow
by Cathy Dellinger
Under the ancient maple sits a small cool space where I can lean back and watch. If I am quiet, the chickadee will land close to my hand, stealing a sunflower then running for cover to indulge itself. If I don't move a muscle, the beaver will wade over silent water, ignoring me and dealing with the business at hand.
And, so, here I introduce the shade garden. That sweet space that is often ignored for it takes just a bit more effort to introduce light into this silent, sensual space that smells sweetly of Mother Earth.
Light and shadows are the essence of art. In the garden, this art form, though subtle takes its own form. Viola's sweet flowers bloom quite happily without the need for sun. And that wonderful heirloom, Bleeding Heart, will last so much longer than it generally does exposed to the sun all day long. Astible will let it's sweet feathers sway in the breeze. There is so much you can do to enlighten and enliven that shady little corner. With a bit of fortitude, and patience, that quiet space will sing on its own.
It is only a matter of effort, simple..when you sit back under that tree and watch as the hummers dance above the flowers. Where they can cool down..along with you. I ponder that ancient maple, still embedded with banks of snow..knowing it will conceal me and afford me a moment to be still. Embellish those small spaces...with love and patience..for they will afford you that moment to "be."
