Types of Leaves in the Autumn


American BeechAmerican Beech
It's leaves turn yellow then bronze. The leaves will often remain on the tree through the winter.


American Mountain AshAmerican Mountain Ash
Is pronounced in the early fall on high ridges. Has bright red berries and yellow leaves.


BasswoodBasswood
Aka Linden. It's large leaves turn a pale yellow color.


Large Toothed AspenLarge Toothed Aspen
Leaves are larger than the Quaking Aspen. Remains green until late in the fall then turns yellow, like the Quaking Aspen.


Northern Red OakNorthern Red Oak
Leaves first change into a deep red, then orange, then a warm dark brown.


Pin CherryPin Cherry
The leaves are usually purple/green and they change to yellow.


Quaking AspenQuaking Aspen
It's leaves stay green until late in the fall then turn yellow.


Red MapleRed Maple
Aka. Swamp Maple. They turn early and are usually bare by mid-October. Bright red with yellow and orange.


Speckled AlderSpeckled Alder
Doesn't really change color. Stands out in swamps. The leaves will usually brown a little and fall in November.


Striped MapleStriped Maple
Most noticed in about mid-October. It's large leaves turn a yellow or creamy color.


Sugar MapleSugar Maple
Most pronounced in mid-October the leaves are yellow, orange, and sometimes red.


SumacSumac
Dark red or purple leaves. The twigs also turn fuzzy similar to velvety antlers.


TamarackTamarack
It's yellow needles stand out in swamps. Is the only local conifer to shed all its needles.


TupeloTupelo
This tree is usually found in swamps and it's leaves turn red.


White AshWhite Ash
Most noticeable in October is a yellow or purple color. The leaves fall after changing color with the first heavy frost.


White BirchWhite Birch
Along with Yellow & Mountain Birch in early October colors the high mountain slopes bright yellow.


Witch HazelWitch Hazel
The yellow leaves camouflage it's small yellow flowers.
